The molecular formula of light magnesium oxide is MgO, with a relative molecular mass of 40.30. Light magnesium oxide is an odorless, tasteless, non-toxic white amorphous powder. It is sparingly soluble in water, insoluble in alcohol, but soluble in acids or ammonium salt solutions. Its solubility in water increases with higher CO₂ content. It has a melting point of 2852°C and a boiling point of 3600°C. When calcined at temperatures above 1000°C, it transforms into a crystalline form.
