Microbial Carbon Supplement

Biological nitrogen removal requires the completion of two processes: nitrification and denitrification. The ammonia nitrogen in wastewater must be nitrified or converted into nitrite and nitrate. Then, during the denitrification process, nitrate is reduced to nitrogen gas, serving as an electron acceptor in the cellular respiration process to oxidize simple carbon compounds. Therefore, the denitrification process aimed at removing nitrate must involve the presence of readily biodegradable carbon sources.
