II. Main Uses

Ethanol is an important organic solvent widely used in pharmaceuticals, coatings, hygiene products, cosmetics, fats and oils, among other applications, accounting for about 50% of total ethanol consumption. Ethanol is a key basic chemical raw material used in the production of acetaldehyde, ethylene, ethylamine, ethyl acetate, acetic acid, chloroethane, and more. It also serves as a precursor for many intermediates in products such as pharmaceuticals, dyes, coatings, fragrances, synthetic rubber, detergents, and pesticides, with over 300 derived products. The use of ethanol as an intermediate in chemical production is gradually declining, as many products like acetaldehyde, acetic acid, and ethyl alcohol are no longer produced from ethanol but are instead manufactured using other raw materials. A 75% aqueous ethanol solution has strong bactericidal properties and is commonly used as a disinfectant. Specially refined ethanol can also be used in the production of beverages. Similar to methanol, ethanol can be used as an energy source.
