Ecdysterone, also known as molting hormone, has the chemical formula C₂₇H₄₄O₇ and is extracted from the roots of the plant Cyanotis arachnoidea in the Commelinaceae family. Depending on its purity, it appears as a white, off-white, pale yellow, or light brown crystalline powder. It is odorless, hygroscopic, and its color gradually darkens upon exposure to light. It is readily soluble in ethanol.
