Main Uses
Propionaldehyde is an important intermediate for organic synthesis. Its uses are primarily based on the reactivity of the aldehyde group and the diversity of the resulting products:
Synthesis of n-propanol: It produces n-propanol through catalytic hydrogenation. n-Propanol is an important solvent and chemical raw material used in coatings, inks, cosmetics, and other fields.
Synthesis of propionic acid: It is used to prepare propionic acid via oxidation. Propionic acid and its salts (such as sodium propionate) are food preservatives and are also used in feed additives, herbicides, etc.
Preparation of acetals: Acetals formed by condensation with alcohols can be used as solvents, fragrances, or intermediates for organic synthesis.
Synthesis of other fine chemicals:
Used to prepare trimethylolpropane (an important polyol used in coatings, polyurethanes, resins, etc.). The reaction process involves the condensation of the aldehyde with formaldehyde followed by subsequent reduction;
Used as an intermediate to synthesize pharmaceuticals, fragrances, plastic additives, etc.
