Main Applications
Synthesis of Polyamides (Nylon)
This is the most important use of adipic acid: it generates Nylon 66 (polyhexamethylene adipamide) through polycondensation with hexamethylenediamine, serving as a key raw material for the production of fibers and engineering plastics. Nylon 66 possesses characteristics such as high strength, wear resistance, and oil resistance, and is widely used in automotive parts, textile fibers (such as nylon ropes and clothing fabrics), mechanical parts, etc.
Synthesis of Polyesters
It generates polyester resins through esterification followed by polycondensation with polyols (such as ethylene glycol and propylene glycol), used in coatings, adhesives, plastic plasticizers, etc. For example, polybutylene adipate (PBA), generated by the reaction of adipic acid with 1,4-butanediol, is an important raw material for the production of biodegradable plastics.
Production of Plasticizers
It reacts with alcohols (such as octanol) to generate adipate ester plasticizers (such as dioctyl adipate), characterized by good low-temperature performance and low volatility. These are used in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products (such as cables and films) to improve their flexibility.
Other Applications
As a food additive (an acidity regulator permitted by GB 2760), it is used in jellies, beverages, etc., to regulate taste and pH value.
In the pharmaceutical field, it is used to synthesize certain pharmaceutical intermediates (such as antiepileptic drugs).
As an organic synthesis raw material, it is used to prepare compounds such as adiponitrile and hexanediol.
