This product is a colorless, transparent, or white, translucent hexagonal crystal or white granular powder. It is odorless, salty, bitter, and slightly hygroscopic. It is prone to deliquescence in moist air. Upon exposure to light and air, it liberates free iodine and turns yellow, a change that occurs more readily in acidic aqueous solutions. It is extremely soluble in water, with significant heat absorption during dissolution, and soluble in ethanol, acetone, methanol, glycerol, and liquid ammonia.
