It is a yellow, hygroscopic, transparent, viscous liquid with a pungent ammonia odor. It is flammable and strongly alkaline. It is soluble in water, acetone, benzene, ether, methanol, etc., but sparingly soluble in n-heptane. It is corrosive to copper and its alloys. This product exhibits the reactivity of a secondary amine and readily reacts with various compounds; its derivatives have extensive uses. It easily absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide from the air.
