1. Synthesis of Polymer Monomers (Most Critical Use)

Precursor to Caprolactam: Cyclohexanone reacts with hydroxylamine to form cyclohexanone oxime, which then undergoes Beckmann rearrangement (acid-catalyzed) to produce caprolactam—the monomer for Nylon 6 (polycaprolactam). Approximately 60% of the global cyclohexanone supply is used in this field;

Raw Material for Adipic Acid: Cyclohexanone is oxidized by nitric acid to produce adipic acid, which is one of the monomers for Nylon 66 (polyhexamethylene adipamide) and is widely used in textile fibers and engineering plastics.

2. High-Performance Solvent

Due to its strong solvency power and moderate evaporation rate (slower than acetone, faster than cyclohexanol), it is widely used in:

Coatings and Inks: Dissolving alkyd resins, epoxy resins, polyurethanes, etc., used in automotive paints, wood finishes, and printing inks (reducing VOC emissions, replacing some benzene-based solvents);

Adhesives: As a solvent for rubber and plastic (e.g., PVC) adhesives to enhance tack and coatability;

Extractants: Used for the extraction and separation of rare metals (such as ruthenium, palladium) or for extracting aromatics from petroleum fractions.

3. Fine Chemical Intermediates

Synthesis of fragrances (e.g., cyclohexyl formaldehyde, musk-type fragrances), pharmaceuticals (intermediates for antiepileptic drugs), and dyes (synthetic precursors for vat dyes);

Preparation of cyclohexanone resins (used as coating gloss agents and ink binders), possessing excellent gloss and adhesion.
