Main Uses

Standard Fuel and Octane Number Reference

The octane number of n-heptane is defined as 0 (isooctane is 100), making it a reference substance for measuring the anti-knock performance of gasoline. The octane number of gasoline is determined by comparing it with a mixture of n-heptane and isooctane.

Organic Solvent

Used for extracting fats, waxes, resins, and other substances, and also as a solvent for organic synthesis reactions (such as in extraction and crystallization processes).

In the laboratory, it is commonly used as a standard substance or solvent in chromatographic analysis (such as gas chromatography).

Chemical Raw Material

Through reactions such as dehydrogenation and isomerization, it can be used to prepare olefins and aromatics, which are used to synthesize polymer materials like rubber and plastics. It can also be used to produce fine chemical products such as surfactants and plasticizers.

Other Applications

As a cleaning agent, it is used for degreasing and cleaning precision instruments and metal surfaces (due to its strong solubility and high volatility).

In the fuel sector, it can serve as a blending component for gasoline (however, due to its low octane number, the proportion must be controlled).
