Potassium bicarbonate

The main applications of potassium bicarbonate are closely related to its weak alkalinity, gas production upon thermal decomposition, and the nutritional value of potassium:

Acidity regulator: Neutralizes acidity in food (such as in beverages and jams), adjusts pH levels, and extends shelf life.

Fermentation aid: In beer and wine brewing, it adjusts the pH of the fermentation liquid and promotes yeast activity.

Pharmaceutical and Agricultural Medicine Fields:

As a potassium supplement, it is used to treat hypokalemia (potassium is a key element for maintaining nerve and muscle function);

It can also be used as an antacid to relieve stomach pain caused by excess stomach acid.

Agricultural Field:

As a potassium fertilizer (containing about 39% potassium), it is used for foliar spraying or soil fertilization, especially suitable for potassium-loving crops (such as tobacco, grapes, and potatoes). It can improve the crop's resistance to lodging and fruit quality; meanwhile, it can adjust soil pH (use with caution in alkaline soils).

Industrial Field Preparation of Potassium Carbonate: Through the thermal decomposition of potassium bicarbonate, high-purity potassium carbonate is produced (used in the glass, ceramic, and dye industries).

Gas Purification: Used as an absorbent to remove acidic gases (such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide) from industrial waste gas. The reaction is \(KHCO_3 + H_2S = KHS + CO_2 + H_2O\).

Fire Safety Field: As a component of dry powder fire extinguishing agents, it inhibits combustion by releasing carbon dioxide.

Laboratory and Analytical Chemistry Used to prepare carbon dioxide gas (faster than the reaction of calcium carbonate with hydrochloric acid).

As a primary standard substance for calibrating acid solution concentrations; or used in the preparation of buffer solutions (such as mixing with potassium carbonate to form a pH-stable buffer system).
