Potassium bromide

　　Main Uses

　　Pharmaceutical Field:

　　Formerly used as a sedative and anticonvulsant drug for treating epilepsy, insomnia, neurasthenia, etc. (by inhibiting central nervous system excitability; its mechanism is similar to ammonium bromide, but with relatively fewer side effects; clinical application has currently decreased and it has been replaced by safer drugs).

　　Used to prepare mydriatics for ophthalmic examinations or as an excipient for certain drugs.

　　Analysis and Laboratory:

　　Used as an analytical reagent to determine metal ions such as silver, copper, and lead in chemical analysis, or as a bromine source to participate in organic synthesis reactions.

　　In spectrophotometry, used to prepare standard solutions or as a co-solvent to enhance the solubility of certain substances.

　　Used to prepare bromide standard solutions for calibrating instruments or validating analytical methods.

　　Photography and Imaging:

　　An important component of emulsions in traditional film photography; silver bromide (generated by the reaction of potassium bromide with silver nitrate) is sensitive to light and is the core substance of the photosensitive layer in film, used to record images.

　　Other Fields:

　　In petroleum drilling, used as an additive for completion fluids to regulate the density and performance of the drilling fluid.

　　Used to prepare potassium bromide window discs (in infrared spectroscopy, used as sample cell material due to their good transmittance of infrared light).
