It is currently one of the most widely used devices for icing detection in power grids.

The Transmission Line Icing Monitoring Terminal is entirely powered by a combination of solar panels and high-capacity batteries. During normal operation, the solar panels provide daily power for the device, with excess power stored in the battery. When sunlight conditions are poor or at night, the battery is used for power supply. The tension sensor at the front of the device measures conductor load data, and after backend calculation, the icing thickness is obtained. If the calculated icing value exceeds the warning threshold, an alarm is immediately sent to operation and maintenance personnel, who promptly take de-icing measures such as ice melting to reduce economic losses caused by icing.
