Microwave-based Icing Monitoring Device for Transmission Lines

I. Overview

As the year comes to an end, temperatures have plummeted in many regions affected by cold snaps. This period also marks a time of high work pressure for power grid personnel. To ensure the normal operation of power grids and safeguard public warmth during winter, operation and maintenance departments often deploy a large number of inspection workers to investigate icing conditions of lines within their jurisdiction. For lines with severe icing, workers have to de-ice in snow and wind, which is very arduous. As a company that entered the power grid security field at an early stage, Telcom has naturally noticed this issue. To address this problem, Telcom has developed the Microwave-based Icing Monitoring Device for Transmission Lines, which is used to assist power grid inspectors in monitoring line operation status and identifying icing conditions of lines.

II. Working Principle

The front end of the Microwave-based Icing Monitoring Device for Transmission Lines is composed of a video acquisition module, a microwave icing monitoring module, a communication module, a micro-meteorological monitoring module and a main chassis. It can record data such as line icing thickness, ambient temperature, humidity and video in real time, and send the collected data wirelessly to the background monitoring server for storage via the communication module. Customers can access and browse the data in the server at any time through PC or mobile terminals, which facilitates operation and maintenance personnel to analyze abnormal icing conditions in a timely manner and immediately formulate de-icing plans and measures to ensure the normal operation of lines.

V. Postscript

Icing disasters on transmission lines have existed since the initial erection of lines, affecting the normal operation of lines. Their formation factors make them more prevalent in some southern regions and northeastern China. During long-term work with icing issues, power grid inspectors have found that response time is a key factor affecting the severity of icing disasters. The earlier icing is detected, the earlier it can be addressed, and the smaller the resulting harm. Therefore, when early inspection methods were limited, inspection relied on manual on-site work, which was less efficient. The emergence of Telcom's Microwave-based Icing Monitoring Device for Transmission Lines has changed this situation. It enables remote real-time monitoring and early warning of line icing, allowing back-end inspectors to access on-site data anytime and anywhere and make correct solutions as early as possible. It is currently an effective measure to address icing issues on transmission lines.
