Helium-3 (He-3) gas is a colorless, odorless, and stable isotope of helium, typically stored as a high-pressure gas in cylinders. The natural abundance of helium-3 is 1.38×10⁻⁶. When its concentration increases, causing oxygen levels to drop below 19.5%, it may lead to asphyxiation.

Helium-3 is a clean, safe, and efficient fuel for nuclear fusion power generation. The development and utilization of helium-3 from lunar soil represent one of the most promising approaches to addressing humanity's energy crisis.

Helium-3 is an isotope of helium, containing two protons and one neutron. It possesses many unique properties. According to dilution refrigeration theory, when helium-3 and helium-4 are mixed in specific proportions, temperatures can be lowered infinitely close to absolute zero. At temperatures below 2.18K, liquid helium-3 exhibits "superfluidity," meaning it has no viscosity and can even "climb" out of the container holding it. However, the most notable characteristic of helium-3 currently is its potential as an energy source. Helium-3 can undergo nuclear fusion with hydrogen isotopes, but unlike conventional fusion reactions, it does not produce neutrons, resulting in low radioactivity and a process that is easier to control, making it both environmentally friendly and safe. Unfortunately, Earth's reserves of helium-3 total no more than a few hundred kilograms, insufficient to meet human needs. Scientists have discovered that while helium-3 is extremely scarce on Earth, its reserves on the Moon are substantial.
