Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, non-irritating asphyxiating gas under normal temperature and pressure. It is flammable in air, burning with a blue flame. It forms explosive mixtures with air. It does not react with acids, alkalis, or water. Under high temperature and pressure, it reacts with metals like iron, chromium, and nickel to form carbonyl metals, combines with chlorine to form phosgene, and forms carbonyl metal compounds with carbonyl metals. Carbon monoxide has a reducing effect; in the presence of manganese and copper oxides at room temperature, it can be oxidized to CO2. Some gas masks utilize this principle.
The maximum allowable concentration of carbon monoxide in air is 20 mg/m³, with a flammable range of approximately 12.5% to 74%. It is mainly used for controlling carbon monoxide concentrations in the working air environments of petrochemical plants, calibrating carbon monoxide alarms in mines and households, and calibrating combustible gas alarm equipment installed in natural gas plants, natural gas filling stations, and other places where combustible gases may leak.
