Applications of High Purity Hydrogen

Hydrogen is a major industrial raw material and one of the most important industrial and specialty gases.
1. It is widely used in petroleum chemical industry, electronics industry, metallurgical industry, food processing, float glass manufacturing, fine organic synthesis, aerospace, and more.
2. Hydrogen is also an ideal secondary energy source (secondary energy refers to energy that must be produced from a primary energy source such as solar energy or coal).
3. In high-temperature processing in glass manufacturing and the production of electronic microchips, hydrogen is added to nitrogen protective atmospheres to remove residual oxygen.
4. In the petrochemical industry, hydrogen is used for refining crude oil through desulfurization and hydrocracking.
5. Another important application of hydrogen is the hydrogenation of fats in margarine, cooking oil, shampoo, lubricants, household cleaners, and other products.
6. Due to its high combustibility, the aerospace industry uses liquid hydrogen as fuel.

High purity hydrogen is also used in nuclear research, as bombarding particles in deuteron accelerators, as a tracer, as a raw material for hydrogen flame ionization detection in gas chromatography, for filling weather balloons due to its low density, as a new high-energy fuel (for rocket propulsion), in the smelting of metals such as tungsten and molybdenum, and in industries including petroleum refining, float glass, electronics, food, drinking water, chemical production, aerospace, and automotive.

High purity hydrogen is a colorless, odorless, flammable gas. Its flammability limits in air are 4.0% to 75.0% (by volume). Auto-ignition temperature is 571.2°C. Relative density ds (0°C, air=1) is 0.06960. ρg 0.08342 kg/m³ (21.1°C, 101.3 kPa); liquid density is 70.96 kg/m³ (-252.8°C, 101.3 kPa). Boiling point is -252.8°C. Melting point is -259.2°C. Hydrogen molecules consist of two isomers, with an ortho-para ratio of 75:25 at room temperature. As temperature decreases, the para-hydrogen proportion increases, accompanied by the release of conversion heat. The equilibrium composition at 20.4 K is 0.2:99.8. Hydrogen is non-toxic but cannot sustain life.
