High Purity Oxygen Description
Oxygen is chemically reactive. Except for noble gases and less reactive metal elements such as gold, platinum, and silver, most elements can react with oxygen. These reactions are called oxidation reactions, and the compounds produced (composed of two elements, one of which is oxygen) are called oxides. Generally, aqueous solutions of non-metal oxides are acidic, while oxides of alkali or alkaline earth metals are alkaline. Additionally, almost all organic compounds can burn vigorously in oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water. Chemically, reactions between substances and oxygen were once defined as oxidation reactions, while redox reactions refer to reactions involving electron transfer or shift.
Oxygen has combustion-supporting and oxidizing properties.
Metallurgical Processes: During steelmaking, blowing high-purity oxygen causes oxygen to react with carbon, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, etc., which not only reduces the carbon content of the steel but also helps remove impurities like phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon. Moreover, the heat generated during oxidation is sufficient to maintain the temperature required for the steelmaking process. Therefore, oxygen blowing not only shortens the smelting time but also improves the quality of the steel. In blast furnace ironmaking, increasing the oxygen concentration in the blast air can reduce the coke ratio and increase output. In non-ferrous metal smelting, using oxygen-enriched air can also shorten smelting time and increase production.
Chemical Industry: In the production of synthetic ammonia, oxygen is mainly used for the oxidation of feedstock gas to intensify the process and increase fertilizer output. Other examples include high-temperature cracking of heavy oil and gasification of pulverized coal.
Defense Industry: Liquid oxygen is the best combustion supporter for modern rockets. It is also needed as an oxidizer in supersonic aircraft. Combustible materials soaked in liquid oxygen become highly explosive and can be used to make liquid oxygen explosives.
Healthcare: Supplying respiration: Used in hypoxic, low-oxygen, or oxygen-free environments, such as diving operations, mountain climbing, high-altitude flights, space travel, and medical emergencies.
Other Applications: It serves as a combustion supporter alongside combustible gases like acetylene and propane for welding and cutting metals. It is widely used across various industries, particularly in mechanical enterprises, and is very convenient for cutting purposes, making it the preferred cutting method.
