Applications of Nitrous Oxide as a Special Gas
Nitrous oxide is mainly used in the electronics industry and medical field.
1. Used as a leak detection agent, refrigerant, and as a combustion-supporting agent in atomic absorption spectroscopy.
2. Used as an oxidizer in blowtorches; as a balance or protective gas in semiconductor device manufacturing processes; used in chemical vapor deposition (CVD) processes for preparing doped silicon dioxide films.
3. Nitrous oxide is also widely used in the pressure packaging field as a propellant for various aerosol products.
4. In the food industry, it is extensively used as a foaming agent for whipped cream and as a sealing agent for food products. It is also used as a freezing gas and freezing liquid in food immersion freezing.
5. Nitrous oxide can also serve as an auxiliary ingredient in fuels.
6. Increasing vehicle speed: Modified vehicles using nitrous oxide acceleration systems inject nitrous oxide into the engine, where it decomposes into nitrogen and oxygen upon heating, improving the engine's combustion rate and increasing speed. Oxygen aids combustion, accelerating fuel burning.
Main Medical Uses
Due to its weak general anesthetic effect, it is often used in combination with halothane, methoxyflurane, ether, or intravenous anesthetics. It is now less commonly used. Nitrous oxide (N₂O) is used for anesthesia and does not irritate the respiratory tract, nor does it harm the functions of vital organs such as the heart, lungs, liver, or kidneys. It undergoes no biotransformation or degradation in the body, with the majority being excreted unchanged through exhalation, and only a small amount evaporating through the skin, with no accumulation effect. Inhalation produces analgesic effects within 30–40 seconds, with strong analgesic but weak anesthetic effects, keeping the patient conscious (rather than anesthetized), avoiding complications of general anesthesia, and allowing for faster postoperative recovery.
Precautions for Nitrous Oxide as a Special Gas
Operation: Perform operations in a closed environment with good natural ventilation. Operators must receive specialized training and strictly adhere to operating procedures. Keep away from ignition sources and heat; smoking is strictly prohibited in the workplace. Avoid contact with flammable and combustible materials. Prevent gas leakage into the workplace air. Avoid contact with reducing agents. Handle with care during transportation to prevent damage to cylinders and attachments. Equip with appropriate types and quantities of fire-fighting equipment and leak emergency handling devices.
Storage: Store in a cool, well-ventilated warehouse. Keep away from ignition sources and heat. Storage temperature should not exceed 30°C. Store separately from flammable/combustible materials and reducing agents; avoid mixed storage. The storage area should be equipped with leak emergency handling equipment.
Transportation: When transporting via cylinders, safety caps must be securely fastened. Cylinders should generally be placed horizontally with the valve openings facing the same direction and not crossed; height should not exceed the vehicle’s guardrails, and they should be secured with triangular wooden blocks to prevent rolling. Mixing with flammable or combustible materials, reducing agents, etc., is strictly prohibited. Transport during early morning or evening in summer to avoid exposure to direct sunlight. Sliding is prohibited during railway transportation.
Disposal: Refer to national and local regulations before disposal. Exhaust gas can be directly discharged into the atmosphere.
