High purity nitrous oxide is mainly used as an anesthetic in dentistry, surgery, and gynecology, for leak detection, as a refrigerant, combustion aid, preservative, chemical raw material, gas for atomic absorption spectroscopy, balance gas for semiconductor manufacturing, oxidation, chemical vapor deposition, standard gas, medical gas, aerosol propellant, vacuum and pressure leak detection.
Increasing Vehicle Speed
Modified vehicles using nitrous oxide acceleration systems inject nitrous oxide into the engine, where it decomposes into nitrogen and oxygen upon heating, increasing the engine's combustion rate and speed. Oxygen aids combustion, accelerating fuel burning.
Oxidizing Agent
Nitrous oxide can be used as an oxidizing agent. Its advantage over other oxidizing agents is that it is non-toxic, stable at room temperature, easy to store, and relatively safe to handle. A second benefit is that it can easily decompose into breathable air.

Protection

Provide reasonable ventilation to accelerate diffusion. Handle leaking containers properly; repair and inspect before reuse.
