Uses of High Purity Ammonia Gas and Liquid Ammonia

Liquid ammonia is mainly used in the production of nitric acid, urea, and other chemical fertilizers, and can also be used as a raw material in pharmaceuticals and pesticides.
1. In the defense industry, it is used to manufacture propellants for rockets and missiles.
2. Used as an amination raw material for organic chemical products and also as a refrigerant.
The lone pair of electrons in the NH₃ molecule tends to form coordination bonds with other molecules or ions, generating various forms of ammonia complexes. For example, [Ag(NH₃)₂]⁺, [Cu(NH₃)₄]²⁺, and BF₃•NH₃ are all complexes with NH₃ as the ligand.
3. When liquid ammonia is heated to 800–850°C and decomposed under the action of a nickel-based catalyst, a hydrogen-nitrogen mixed gas containing 75% H₂ and 25% N₂ can be obtained. The gas produced by this method is an excellent protective atmosphere.
4. It can be widely used in the semiconductor industry, metallurgical industry, and other industries and scientific research requiring a protective atmosphere.
5. Used in various chemical auxiliary materials, smelting, and other industries.

Precautions for High Purity Ammonia Gas and Liquid Ammonia

Ammonia gas has corrosive and irritating effects on the skin tissues it contacts. It can absorb moisture from the skin tissues, denature proteins, saponify fats, and disrupt cell membrane structures. Due to its extremely high solubility, ammonia primarily irritates and corrodes the upper respiratory tract of animals or humans. It is often adsorbed on the skin mucosa and conjunctiva, causing irritation and inflammation. It can paralyze respiratory cilia and damage mucosal epithelial tissues, making it easier for pathogenic microorganisms to invade and reducing the body's resistance to diseases. Ammonia is usually inhaled as a gas. Once inhaled into the lungs, it easily enters the bloodstream through the alveoli, binds with hemoglobin, and disrupts oxygen transport. A small portion of the ammonia entering the alveoli is neutralized by carbon dioxide, while the remainder is absorbed into the bloodstream. A small amount of ammonia can be excreted through sweat, urine, or respiration.

Short-term inhalation of large amounts of ammonia gas can cause tearing, sore throat, hoarseness, coughing, blood-streaked sputum, chest tightness, and difficulty breathing, accompanied by dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. In severe cases, pulmonary edema or adult respiratory distress syndrome may occur, along with respiratory irritation symptoms. If too much ammonia is inhaled, leading to excessively high blood ammonia levels, it can cause cardiac arrest and respiratory failure through reflex action of the trigeminal nerve endings, endangering life.

Long-term exposure to ammonia gas may cause symptoms such as skin pigmentation or finger ulcers in some individuals. Indoor ammonia gas mainly comes from concrete additives used in construction. These additives contain large amounts of ammonia substances, which are reduced to ammonia gas and released as environmental factors such as temperature and humidity change within the walls.

Emergency Response to High Purity Ammonia Gas and Liquid Ammonia Leaks

Ammonia gas is colorless and has a strong pungent odor. It is highly toxic to humans. Chronic ammonia poisoning can lead to respiratory diseases such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Acute ammonia poisoning manifests as persistent coughing and breathlessness.

(1) Minor Leakage.

Evacuate all personnel from the area. Prevent inhalation of vapor and avoid contact with the liquid or gas. Responders should use respirators. Do not enter confined spaces where ammonia may accumulate, and enhance ventilation. Attempt to stop the leak only if it can be done safely. Move leaking containers to a safe area and open valves to release pressure only when it is safe to do so. Use inert absorbent materials such as sand or vermiculite to collect and adsorb the leakage. Place collected leakage in tightly sealed containers with appropriate labels for disposal.

(2) Major Leakage.

Evacuate all unprotected personnel from the site and move upwind. Leak responders should wear fully enclosed heavy-duty chemical protective suits and air respirators. After taking personal protective measures, use spray water to dilute the leakage area. Dilute the ammonia gas on-site gradually with water jets and use spark-proof tools to plug the leak.

Alert local government, "119" (emergency services), local environmental protection departments, and public security departments. The alert should include the name of the accident unit; time, location, chemical name, and quantity of leakage; severity of the hazard; any casualties; and the name and phone number of the person reporting.

Avoid contact with or crossing leaking liquid ammonia. Prevent the leakage from entering sewers and drains. Enhance ventilation. Prohibit smoking and open flames on-site. If safe, plug the leak or tip the leaking container to prevent liquid ammonia from escaping. Use water spray to suppress vapor or change the direction of vapor clouds, but do not use water directly on the leaking liquid ammonia or source. Prevent the leakage from entering water bodies, sewers, basements, or confined spaces. Do not enter confined spaces where ammonia may accumulate. After cleaning, decontaminate all protective clothing and equipment before storage and reuse.
