Introduction to Sulfur Hexafluoride Gas
Sulfur hexafluoride gas is a colorless, odorless, non-toxic, and non-corrosive compound. Under normal temperature and pressure, it exists as a gas and is non-flammable, making it the most chemically stable non-metallic oxide. Due to its excellent chemical and thermal stability, sulfur hexafluoride gas does not decompose even at temperatures up to 500°C when high purity is maintained. It possesses outstanding insulation and arc-quenching capabilities; even if it momentarily decomposes or ionizes under an electric arc, it rapidly returns to its original stable state once the arc is extinguished. Therefore, leveraging its high chemical stability and exceptional electrical insulation properties, it is widely used in the electrical industry and as an ultra-high voltage insulating material. Additionally, it features a high heat transfer coefficient and excellent cooling performance.
Sulfur hexafluoride gas is extensively used as an insulating material and arc-quenching medium in high-voltage and medium-voltage electrical equipment; as an anti-oxidant in metal smelting and manufacturing processes; in meteorological tracer experiments and as a tracer agent; and as a refrigerant and heat carrier in refrigeration processes. In the medical field, it is used as an insulator for X-ray equipment. It is also employed in the production of monocrystalline silicon and in fundamental theoretical scientific research.
Physical and Chemical Properties of Sulfur Hexafluoride Gas
Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6 gas) is a colorless, odorless, non-toxic, non-flammable, and non-corrosive inert gaseous substance under normal pressure. Its gas density is 6.139 g/L (20°C, 0.101 MPa), melting point: -50.8°C, freezing point: -63.8°C, critical temperature: 45.64°C, critical pressure: 3.84 MPa, critical density: 0.73 g/cm³, critical volume: 198 mL/mol, dielectric constant: 1.002026 (25°C, 0.101 MPa). Sulfur hexafluoride exhibits strong chemical stability, not decomposing at 500°C-600°C, and does not react with acids, bases, salts, ammonia, water, etc. Under the influence of an electric arc (thousands of degrees), it decomposes into atomic sulfur and fluorine gases, but once the arc is removed, it recombines into sulfur hexafluoride within 10⁻⁵ to 10⁻⁶ seconds. Sulfur hexafluoride possesses excellent electrical insulation properties and superior arc-quenching capabilities. Its electrical strength is 2.5 times that of nitrogen at the same pressure, its breakdown voltage is 2.5 times that of air, and its arc-quenching ability is 100 times that of air, making it a next-generation high-voltage insulating medium superior to both air and oil.
