Industrial helium is commonly used in cryogenics, superconductivity, vacuum balloons, welding, and leak detection.

Helium is mainly used in the following industries: aerospace/diving/balloon inflation/electronics (leak detection)/fiber optics. Helium generally serves as a shielding gas in arc welding due to its inert chemical properties, which isolate oxygen and nitrogen to prevent adverse effects on molten metal. Only gas welding, which uses acetylene combustion in oxygen to generate high temperatures for welding, uses oxygen.

Industrial Helium Precautions

1. Industrial helium pressure is typically 13.5 MPa. Use a pressure reducer such as YQY-12 or 152IN-125 to reduce pressure before use. Before use, check gas pipelines for leaks with soapy water to ensure they are leak-free.

2. Ensure there is no helium leakage and that the workplace is well-ventilated. When helium concentration increases, reducing oxygen levels below 19.5%, symptoms may include rapid breathing, lack of concentration, and ataxia, followed by fatigue, restlessness, nausea, vomiting, coma, convulsions, and even death. Packaged cylinders have a service life indicated; cylinders that have expired must be sent to authorized departments for safety inspection before further use.

3. When the helium in a cylinder is nearly depleted, retain an residual pressure of 0.5 MPa inside the cylinder, with a minimum of 0.25 MPa. Close the cylinder valve to ensure gas quality and usage safety.

4. Cylinders of helium should be stored and used in categorized stacks, kept away from open flames and heat sources. Avoid fire, oil, wax, direct sunlight, heavy throwing, and impact. Do not strike an arc on the cylinder body, and avoid rough handling. For short-distance moves, use a dedicated cylinder hand truck; for long-distance transport, use hazardous material transport vehicles. The temperature of liquid helium is -268.9°C; contact with skin can cause severe frostbite.
