Applications of Ultra-High Purity Helium
Ultra-high purity helium is used in ultra-low temperature research, gas phase analysis, welding, leak detection, chemical vapor deposition, crystal growth, plasma dry etching, special gas mixtures, etc. It serves as a standard gas, balance gas, medical gas, and for inflating balloons, electron tubes, diving suits, etc. Industrial helium is used to fill balloons, thermometers, electron tubes, diving suits, nuclear reactors, and accelerators; liquid helium can be used as a cryogenic source and in superconducting technology. Ultra-pure helium can also be used as a leak detection agent in high-vacuum devices, nuclear reactors, spacecraft, etc., and as a shielding gas for welding metals such as magnesium, zirconium, aluminum, and titanium. 6N helium is used in rockets and spacecraft as a pressurizing gas for delivering liquid propellants like liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen. Imported helium is also used as a cleaning agent in nuclear reactors, a carrier gas in gas chromatography, balloon inflation, shielding gas for arc welding, mixed gas for diving, and filling gas for gas thermometers; as a processing aid; industrial helium is used as a filling gas.
Because helium is very light and non-flammable, it can be used to fill airships, balloons, thermometers, electron tubes, diving suits, etc. It can also be used in nuclear reactors and accelerators, lasers, as a shielding gas in smelting and welding, and to fill light bulbs and neon tubes. It is also used in the production of foam plastics.
Because helium has low solubility in blood, it can be added to oxygen to prevent decompression sickness, serving as a breathing gas for divers or for treating asthma and suffocation.
The temperature of liquid helium (-268.93 °C) is close to absolute zero (-273°C), so it is used as a superfluid in superconductivity research and in the manufacture of superconducting materials. Liquid helium is also commonly used as a coolant and refrigerant. In medicine, it is used in argon-helium knives to treat cancer.
Ultra-pure helium (imported helium) can also be used as a component of artificial atmospheres and laser media.
Ultra-pure helium can be used for corpse preservation; the gas inside crystal coffins is helium.
Ultra-pure helium is often used in the following institutions and fields:
6N imported ultra-pure helium is favored by university laboratories, medical institutions, and research units. It is frequently used in medical and scientific research!
Precautions for Using Helium
1. The pressure of industrial helium is usually 13.5 MPa. When using it, reduce the pressure with a pressure reducer such as YQY-12 or 152IN-125. Before use, check the gas pipeline for leaks with soapy water to ensure the pipeline is leak-free.
2. Ensure that helium does not leak and that the workplace remains ventilated. When the helium concentration increases, causing the oxygen level to drop below 19.5%, symptoms may include rapid breathing, lack of concentration, and loss of coordination, followed by fatigue, restlessness, nausea, vomiting, coma, convulsions, and even death. Packaged gas cylinders have a specified service life. Cylinders that have reached their expiration date must be sent to the relevant department for safety inspection before they can continue to be used.
3. When the helium in a cylinder is nearly used up, retain a residual pressure of 0.5 MPa in the cylinder, not less than 0.25 MPa. Close the cylinder valve to ensure gas quality and usage safety.
4. Cylinders of helium should be stored and used in categorized stacks during transportation. Keep away from open flames and heat sources. Avoid fire, oil, wax, direct sunlight, heavy throwing, and impact. Do not strike an arc on the cylinder. Avoid rough handling. For short-distance movement of helium cylinders, use a dedicated cylinder handcart. For long-distance movement, use hazardous material transport vehicles. The temperature of liquid helium is -268.9°C; contact with skin can cause severe frostbite.
