Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid is an organic acid with the chemical formula C7H6O3. It appears as a white crystalline powder, slightly soluble in cold water, easily soluble in hot water and ethanol, and soluble in hot benzene. It is primarily used as an important raw material in the production of fine chemicals such as pharmaceuticals, fragrances, dyes, pesticides, and rubber additives. As a precursor to aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) and a plant hormone, salicylic acid occurs naturally in various plants, particularly in the bark of willow trees. It is mainly synthesized from phenol and carbon dioxide, with modern production methods involving the reaction of dry sodium phenolate (sodium salt of phenol) with carbon dioxide, followed by acid treatment.

Uses of Salicylic Acid:

1. Used as a standard for alkalimetry and iodometry titrations, fluorescent indicator, and complexometric indicator.
2. In the rubber industry, it serves as a scorch inhibitor and is used in the production of ultraviolet absorbers and blowing agents.
3. Functions as a complexometric indicator, complex masking agent, color developer for ions such as titanium, zirconium, and tungsten, and as a preservative.
4. Acts as an additive in certain weakly acidic electrolytes and as a complexing agent in electroplating or electroless plating.
5. Employed as a cosmetic preservative, mainly in floral waters, prickly heat lotions, and quinine hair tonics. In addition to its preservative and antibacterial effects, it also helps eliminate body odor, relieve itching and swelling, and reduce pain and inflammation.
6. Serves as a raw material in the pharmaceutical industry for the preparation of aspirin, sodium salicylate, salicylamide, analgesics, phenyl salicylate, and anti-schistosome-67. In the dye industry, it is used to produce mordant pure yellow, direct brown 3GN, acid chrome yellow, etc. It is also utilized as a rubber vulcanization retarder and disinfectant preservative.
7. Functions as an accelerator for epoxy resin curing and as a preservative. It is also used to prepare synthetic fragrances such as methyl salicylate and ethyl salicylate. In the dye industry, it serves as a raw material for direct dyes and acid dyes. Additionally, it is used as a rubber scorch inhibitor and disinfectant.
8. Small quantities are used in formulating daily fragrances such as animal-type scents, and trace amounts are added to food products for their preservative effects.
