Calcium carbonate
Other Products
Calcium carbonate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula CaCO₃, and it is the main component of limestone, marble, and other materials. It is typically a white crystal, odorless, and practically insoluble in water, but reacts easily with acids to release carbon dioxide[1]. It is one of the most common substances on Earth, found in rocks such as aragonite, calcite, chalk, limestone, marble, and travertine, and is also a major component of the bones or shells of certain animals. Calcium carbonate is an important building material and has a wide range of industrial applications
Physical Properties
Calcium carbonate is a fine white crystalline powder, odorless and tasteless. It exists in both amorphous and crystalline forms. The crystalline form can be further divided into orthorhombic and hexagonal systems (anhydrous calcium carbonate is a colorless orthorhombic crystal, while hexahydrate calcium carbonate is a colorless monoclinic crystal[3]), appearing as columnar or rhombic shapes with a density of 2.93 g/cm³. Its melting point is 1339°C (it decomposes at 825–896.6°C), and at 10.7 MPa, the melting point is 1289°C. It is almost insoluble in water, dissolves in water containing ammonium salts or ferric oxide, and is insoluble in alcohol.
