Adding tellurium to steel increases its ductility. Trace amounts of tellurium in cast iron make the surface of castings hard and wear-resistant. When added to lead, it enhances lead's hardness. It is also used in battery plates, printing type, and as a coloring agent for blue, brown, and red glass, as well as a vulcanizing agent for rubber and a brightener in electroplating solutions.
