Description
Additional Information

According to statistics, there are tens of thousands of fire incidents worldwide each year caused by the flammability of furniture materials, with heat sources such as cigarettes being a significant trigger. How to evaluate the fire resistance of furniture materials? The NFPA 260 standard, developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), provides a scientific solution to this issue.

1. What is NFPA 260?

NFPA 260, fully titled "Standard Methods of Tests and Classification System for Cigarette Ignition Resistance of Components of Upholstered Furniture," aims to assess the ignition resistance of materials like furniture fillings and fabrics when exposed to a lit cigarette. By simulating real-world scenarios, this standard quantifies the fire resistance of materials, helping manufacturers optimize designs and reduce fire risks.

2. Unveiling the Testing Method

1. Sample Preparation
Select typical components from furniture (such as fabric, filling foam, etc.) and prepare test samples according to standard requirements.

2. Simulating Heat Source
Place a standard cigarette (with a specific burning rate) on the surface or in the seams of the sample and observe whether it ignites the material.

3. Observation and Recording
Monitor continuously for 30 minutes, recording occurrences of open flame, smoldering, char spread, etc., and measure the burning distance.

3.Standard Classification Levels

1. Class I (High Flame Resistance Level)

Definition: The material demonstrates extremely high ignition resistance during testing, effectively preventing a lit cigarette from causing open flame or smoldering spread.

Testing Conditions:

After the cigarette burns out, the smoldering or char spread distance on or within the material does not exceed 2 inches (5.08 cm).

No open flame occurs during the test, and any smoldering in the material self-extinguishes within 30 minutes after the cigarette is fully consumed.

Practical Significance:

Materials achieving Class I offer higher safety performance and are commonly used in scenarios with strict fire resistance requirements (e.g., public space furniture, high-end home products).

Regulations in some countries or regions may mandate that furniture must meet Class I standards.

2. Class II (Low Flame Resistance Level)

Definition: The material has basic ignition resistance but lower safety compared to Class I, still posing some fire risk.

Testing Conditions:

The smoldering or char spread distance does not exceed 3 inches (7.62 cm).

Brief open flames are permitted but must extinguish immediately after the cigarette is consumed and must not ignite other components.

Practical Significance:

Suitable for home environments with lower fire resistance requirements, often needing to be used in conjunction with other fire protection measures (e.g., flame-retardant coatings).

If only Class II is achieved, it may not comply with certain stringent fire regulations (e.g., California's CAL 117 standard in the U.S.).
