ASTM E1590: Standard Test Method for Fire Testing of Mattresses (Open Flame)

Question 1: What is the scope of application for ASTM E1590?

This test method applies to mattresses in public places, including but not limited to healthcare facilities, elderly nursing homes, boarding and care homes, and university dormitories.

Question 2:How to condition before testing

Before testing, condition the specimen in an atmosphere with a temperature of 21±4°C (70±7°F) and relative humidity below 60% for at least 48 hours.

Question 3: What is the testing process like?

This test involves measuring the rate of heat and smoke release, the total amount of heat released, the rate and concentration of carbon oxides released, and the rate and amount of specimen mass loss.

a.Place the T-shaped propane gas burner at the side of the specimen

b.Ignite the burner

c.Expose the specimen to the burner for 180 seconds, with a flow rate of 12 L/min, pressure of 1015 kPa, and temperature of 20±5°C

d.After the specified burning time, extinguish the gas flame and remove the burner

e.Observe and record

b.Total heat released, MJ;

c.Peak release rate at 10 minutes;
