Category 6A Hybrid Fiber Optic and Power Cable:

Hybrid fiber optic and power cables (power-feeding optical cables) represent a novel access method suitable for communication access network systems. By integrating power transmission copper wires with optical fibers, they simultaneously address both equipment power supply and signal access issues for base stations in a single installation. As a result, they have garnered significant attention from various telecommunications operators. However, to date, there are no corresponding national, industry, or corporate standards to regulate their application, which has prevented their widespread deployment in existing networks.

The world's first hybrid fiber optic and power cable was developed by Japan's Sumitomo Electric Industries in 1978 for submarine photoelectric transmission. The structure of such cables is not particularly complex: typically, the cable core, which contains single-mode or multi-mode fibers along with other materials protecting the fibers, and the power transmission core are arranged around a strengthening element and wrapped together within a water-blocking tape. Filler ropes are placed between the power core and the fiber optic core. Outside the water-blocking tape is a layer of polyester tape, and the entire assembly is finally sheathed in a polyethylene (or flame-retardant) protective jacket.

Depending on their practical applications, hybrid fiber optic and power cables can be categorized into several types, including duct-type, aerial-type, direct-buried-type, indoor-wiring-type, and special-purpose-type. Generally, duct-type, aerial-type, direct-buried-type, and indoor-wiring-type hybrid cables are primarily used outdoors to provide power transmission and signal delivery for outdoor macro base stations. Indoor-wiring-type hybrid cables are mainly applied indoors to supply power and transmit signals for indoor distributed communication stations. Among special-type hybrid fiber optic and power cables, submarine hybrid cables are the most widely used, primarily in submarine cable projects.
