A hovercraft uses high-pressure air to form a cushion between the hull and the water surface (or ground), lifting the hull above the water (or ground) to achieve high-speed navigation. Depending on the size of the hovercraft, the hull can be elevated 23 cm to over 2 meters above the water (or ground), so a hovercraft is not a boat, nor a vehicle, but an "ultra-low-altitude aircraft." Hovercraft possess three major advantages: amphibious capability, high speed, and flexibility. They can operate or land on any interface year-round, including rivers, lakes, oceans, ice, land, streets, swamps, beaches, snow, grasslands, hills, deserts, gravel, wetlands, mudflats, rapids, minefields, overgrown reeds, shrubs, and low trees of all types and sizes.
