Using food-grade liquid mold silicone to create soap molds mainly involves two major steps: mold making and mold usage. The process is low in difficulty and can be completed at home.
1. Mold Making Steps (Creating a Soap Mold from Scratch)
This step involves pouring liquid silicone to create the desired soap mold shape. The key is to ensure accurate proportions of silicone and curing agent and to avoid bubbles.
- Prepare Tools and Materials
- Basic materials: Food-grade liquid silicone, matching curing agent (typically a 1:1 ratio of silicone to curing agent; follow product instructions for exact proportions).
- Auxiliary tools: Mixing cup, stirring stick, disposable gloves, mold release agent (optional), the soap prototype you want to replicate (e.g., cartoon model, handmade soap sample), a container for molding (e.g., plastic box, paper cup).
- Prepare the Prototype and Container
- Clean the surface of the soap prototype. If the surface is rough, sand it smooth first.
- Apply mold release agent evenly to the inner wall of the container and the surface of the prototype (vaseline can be used as a substitute if no mold release agent is available) to facilitate the separation of the silicone mold from the prototype and container later.
- Mix Silicone and Curing Agent
- Pour the liquid silicone and curing agent into the mixing cup according to the product's specified ratio, e.g., 100g silicone with 100g curing agent.
- Stir consistently in one direction for at least 3-5 minutes to ensure complete integration. Avoid white clumps or streaks, as this may affect the mold's hardness and flexibility.
- Pouring and Bubble Removal
- Slowly pour the mixed silicone into the container, ensuring it completely covers the prototype and rises 1-2cm above it to prevent leakage when pouring soap later.
- Gently shake the container 2-3 times or use a toothpick to pop surface bubbles to avoid imperfections in the soap caused by internal bubbles in the mold.
- Curing
- Place the container in a cool, ventilated area away from direct sunlight and high temperatures. Allow it to cure according to the product instructions (typically 24-48 hours; lower temperatures may extend curing time).
- After curing, gently disassemble the container and carefully remove the internal soap prototype. A food-grade silicone soap mold is now complete.
