Application Fields of Nano Zinc Oxide
1. Antibacterial and Deodorizing Fields
Antibacterial Agent: Nano zinc oxide has a strong destructive effect on Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and the spores of prokaryotic Bacillus subtilis, which are highly resistant to heat and antibacterial agents. It can be used to produce antibacterial and deodorizing chemical fibers, decompose harmful gases generated during housing decoration, and purify the air. It can also be used in various antibacterial food packaging materials and animal feed to improve animal immunity, increase tissue zinc content, and enhance anti-diarrheal capabilities.
Deodorizer: Due to the photocatalytic reaction, nano zinc oxide produces peroxides and free radicals with strong oxidizing ability, which can decompose odor-causing substances.
2. Cosmetics and Sunscreen Fields
Nano zinc oxide is a broad-spectrum inorganic ultraviolet (UV) blocker. Due to its effectiveness in blocking UVA, safety, and antibacterial properties, it is widely used in cosmetics such as sunscreens. The main criteria for evaluating the performance of nano zinc oxide in sunscreen cosmetics are UV resistance efficiency, transparency, dispersibility, and light stability.
3. Rubber Industry
The rubber industry is the largest consumer of zinc oxide. Zinc oxide is used as an activator, reinforcing agent, and colorant. The use of nano zinc oxide significantly improves the wear resistance, anti-aging properties, anti-friction ignition resistance, and service life of rubber products.
4. Ceramic Industry
Replacing ordinary zinc oxide with nano zinc oxide in the ceramic industry can reduce the sintering temperature by 400~600°C, effectively lowering energy consumption. Ceramic products made with nano zinc oxide have a bright appearance, dense texture, excellent performance, and new functions such as antibacterial and deodorizing properties.
5. Coating Industry
In the coating industry, using nano zinc oxide can reduce the amount of zinc oxide by one-third while significantly improving various performance indicators. For example, when nano zinc oxide is used in exterior wall coatings, its washability increases by 8 times. Ship-specific coatings made with nano zinc oxide not only provide UV resistance but also kill various microorganisms, thereby improving sailing speed and extending maintenance intervals.
6. Textile Industry
Utilizing the antibacterial, UV-resistant, superhydrophobic, antistatic, and semiconductor properties of nano zinc oxide, multifunctional textile materials can be developed. For example, adding it to fabrics can impart functions such as sun protection, antibacterial, and deodorizing properties.
7. Optical and Electronic Fields
Photocatalyst: Nano zinc oxide particles, as photocatalysts, can increase reaction rates by 100~1000 times without causing light scattering. They also have a large specific surface area and a wide bandgap. Nano zinc oxide is considered a highly promising high-activity photocatalyst.
Optoelectronic Materials: When nano zinc oxide is irradiated by photons with energy greater than its bandgap, electron-hole pairs are generated. The holes have strong oxidizing properties and react with surface OH- to form highly oxidizing OH radicals. These reactive OH radicals can degrade many toxic organic substances that are difficult to biodegrade, converting them into inorganic compounds such as carbon dioxide and water.
Piezoelectric Materials: Nano zinc oxide has a strong electromechanical coupling coefficient and is widely used in ultrasonic transducers, spectrum analyzers, high-frequency filters, high-speed optical switches, and micro-mechanical devices.
Other Electronic Materials: Depending on the preparation conditions, nano zinc oxide can exhibit properties such as photoconductivity and semiconductivity. This variability makes it suitable for applications such as image recording materials, discharge breakdown recording paper for electrophotography, and electrothermal recording paper. Nano zinc oxide can also be used for color copying by adsorbing pigments. Additionally, its hydrophilic properties after acid etching make it suitable for applications like film printing.
8. Glass Manufacturing
Glass containing nano zinc oxide can provide both UV resistance and sterilization, making it suitable for automotive and architectural glass. It is an excellent material for self-cleaning glass.
9. Cable Coatings
Zinc oxide can be used as a flame retardant synergist in cable coatings. Using nano zinc oxide in cable coatings not only provides flame retardancy but also enhances the coating's resistance to UV radiation, reduces sensitivity to humid environmental conditions, and improves aging resistance.
