Vegetable peptone culture media are peptones and culture media made from raw materials free of meat substances and non-GMO ingredients.

Since the emergence of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) in the mid-1980s, there has been growing concern about the use of meat-derived and animal-derived products in the pharmaceutical industry. Subsequent worries about Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSE) in other species have accelerated the demand for materials free of animal tissues.

Despite strict policy requirements for sourcing animal materials from countries/regions with unclear BSE status and rigorous regulatory oversight and certification of all raw materials, Thermo Fisher Scientific has recognized the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries' need for a range of meat-free products.

Therefore, we have developed various vegetable peptones (using plant-derived materials as alternatives to traditional peptones), providing a series of high-nutrition universal culture media for the growth of bacteria and fungi. Pea flour is used as the protein source, and fungal enzymes are employed to produce the peptones.

In particular, the introduction of well-defined, cold-filterable pea vegetable peptones has been well-received and widely adopted across the industry. These are available as irradiated dry powder media or ready-to-use media in bioprocess containers for sterile process control (media simulation fills).

No animal-derived raw materials are used in the production of these products.
