Key Characteristics of Injection Molds
Each type of mold has its own characteristics, and injection molds are one of the most common with numerous features. The external and internal shapes of plastic parts are directly formed by the cavity and core, making the processing of these complex three-dimensional surfaces quite challenging, especially for the internal surfaces of blind holes in the cavity. If traditional processing methods are used, not only is a high level of worker skill required, but multiple steps are needed, resulting in a long processing cycle.
1. High precision and surface quality requirements, along with a long service life.
Currently, the general dimensional accuracy requirement for plastic parts is IT6-7, with a surface roughness of Ra0.2-0.1 μm. Correspondingly, injection molds require dimensional accuracy of IT5-6 and surface roughness below Ra0.1 μm. The laser recording surface of optical discs requires a mirror-like finish with roughness of 0.02-0.01 μm, demanding mold surface roughness below 0.01 μm. Long-life injection molds are essential for improving efficiency and reducing costs. Currently, the service life of injection molds is generally required to exceed 1 million cycles. Injection molds should use rigid mold frames, increase template thickness, and add support pillars or conical elements to prevent deformation under pressure, which can sometimes reach 100 MPa. The ejection mechanism is a critical factor affecting product deformation and dimensional accuracy, so optimal ejection points must be selected to ensure uniform demolding. High-precision injection molds often use insert or fully insert structures, requiring significantly improved machining accuracy and interchangeability of mold components.
2. Long process flow and tight manufacturing timelines.
For injection-molded parts, most are complete products with other components, often waiting for matching market release. Due to high requirements for shape or dimensional accuracy and the varying characteristics of resin materials, repeated testing and modifications are necessary after manufacturing, making development and delivery timelines very tight.
3. Remote design and manufacturing.
Mold manufacturing is not the end goal; product design is proposed by the user. Manufacturers design and produce based on user requirements, and in most cases, the injection production of the product is also carried out at other factories. This results in product design, mold design and manufacturing, and product production being conducted in different locations.
4. Specialized division of labor and dynamic collaboration.
Production batches are small, typically involving single-piece production. However, many standard parts are required, from templates to ejector pins, which cannot be produced by a single manufacturer. Moreover, the manufacturing process is complex, with highly uneven usage of conventional and CNC equipment.
