Factors Affecting EDM Processing Speed in Plastic Mold Factories
1. Polarity Effect: The phenomenon where different polarities (anode and cathode) result in varying material removal rates is called the polarity effect.
(1) Anode Processing: When using short pulses, electron bombardment exceeds ion impact, leading to higher material removal at the anode, with the workpiece connected as the anode. Short pulses (less than 40 microseconds) yield high surface quality but lower efficiency, suitable for fine machining.
(2) Cathode Processing: When using long pulses, material removal at the cathode exceeds that at the anode, requiring the workpiece to be connected as the cathode. Long pulses (greater than 300 microseconds) result in lower surface quality but higher efficiency, suitable for rough machining.
2. Pulse Parameters: Larger pulse energy transfers more heat to the workpiece, increasing material removal. The total erosion amount per unit time at the anode (or cathode) is q = qtf = kwft. Measures: Increase average discharge current, reduce pulse interval, raise pulse frequency, and select appropriate working parameters.
3. Pulse Width: Increasing pulse width enhances material removal, but if too short, heat becomes overly concentrated, increasing the proportion of metal vaporization. Vaporization consumes energy, reducing material removal. If too long, heat loss through conduction increases, decreasing material removal.
4. Material Thermodynamic Constants: Higher melting point, boiling point, specific heat capacity, latent heat of fusion, and latent heat of vaporization reduce material removal and increase machining difficulty. Higher thermal conductivity accelerates heat loss, further reducing material removal.
