PVDF can be processed using common thermoplastic processing methods, such as extrusion, injection molding, casting, compression molding, and transfer molding.
(1) Extrusion: High molecular weight PVDF has good melt strength and can be extruded into films, sheets, tubes, rods, and electrical insulation sleeves. Depending on the equipment and product shape, the temperature is controlled between 210~290°C, with the molding temperature set between 180~240°C. It is crucial to avoid prolonged exposure above its melting temperature. General screw extruders can be used for extrusion molding.
(2) Injection Molding: Low molecular weight PVDF has a high melt flow rate and can be processed using injection molding. Standard injection molding machines are typically used, but the barrel, plunger, and nozzle must be made of corrosion-resistant Ni-based alloy.
(3) Casting: Casting involves dissolving PVDF in dimethylacetamide to form a 20% solid content solution, which is cast onto aluminum foil. After thermal melting at 205~315°C, it is rapidly cooled with water to produce continuous, tough films with a thickness of 0.05~0.075mm.
(4) Compression Molding: PVDF pellets are first preheated in an oven or preheater at 215~235°C. The preheated material is then placed into a mold preheated to 180~195°C. Pressure is applied at 14MPa and maintained, with the holding time depending on the melting and flow requirements. Thick-walled products must be held under pressure and cooled to below 90°C before demolding to avoid vacuum bubbles or deformation.
(5) Transfer Molding: Typically, an extruder is used to plasticize the material, which is then transferred to a storage cylinder. A plunger pump injects the material from the storage cylinder into the mold, where it is held under pressure and cooled. Both compression and transfer molding are mainly used for producing large, thick-walled products.
(5) Other Processing Methods: PVDF can also be processed using techniques such as impregnation, co-extrusion, and compounding.
