Basics of Injection Molding
Injection molding is a manufacturing technique used to produce parts from thermoplastic and thermosetting plastic materials. When heated, the fluid plastic is injected under high pressure into an injection mold, creating the inverse shape of the desired product. Injection molding is widely used to manufacture various components. The injection molding process, from the smallest parts to entire body panels, can be explained in four simple steps: plasticization, injection, solidification, and ejection. Each step is distinct from the others.
These steps can be described as follows:
1. Plasticization: This involves converting polymer material from its normal hard granular form at room temperature into a liquid at the correct melting temperature required for injection.
2. Injection: During this stage, the melt is introduced into the mold to completely fill the cavity or cavities.
3. Solidification: The process of converting the liquid back to its original rigid state.
4. Ejection: The ejection stage is the final step, where the cooled, molded part is removed from the mold cavity.
Granular or powdered materials are commonly used in injection molding, with the main types including POM, PA66, PP, PE, PC, TPC, (ABS), and nylon. A typical injection molding cycle time ranges from 10 to 100 seconds and is controlled by the cooling time of the melted plastic. The melted plastic comes from hard plastic pellets fed into the hopper of the injection molding machine. The pellets or plastic powder are melted inside the machine and then forced into the injection mold through a nozzle by a long screw inside a heated cylinder. It is the most commonly used method for producing everyday items, including bottle caps and outdoor furniture.
