Basic principle of the instrument:
When monochromatic light passes through the measured solution, its energy is absorbed. The intensity of light absorption is proportional to the concentration of the measured substance, in accordance with Lambert-Beer's Law: A=log(1/T)=log(I0/I)=a×b×c
Main application technical fields:
1. Monitoring of oil content in surface water, groundwater, domestic sewage, and industrial wastewater by environmental protection departments
2. Monitoring of oil content in circulating water and wastewater in industries such as petroleum, petrochemicals, chemical smelting, etc.
3. Monitoring of oil content in circulating water and wastewater in industries such as power plants, steel plants, machinery manufacturing, etc.
4. Monitoring of oil content in source water by water supply companies
5. Monitoring of oil content in irrigation and production water in agriculture, forestry, and animal husbandry
6. Monitoring of oil content in marine environments and fishery environments
7. Monitoring of oil content in water by water resources, hydrology, municipal water supply, and drainage departments
8. Monitoring of oil content in water by railway environmental departments
9. Monitoring of oil content in water by major research institutes and third-party testing agencies
Technical principle:
According to the national standard HJ637-2018, extract oil substances from water using tetrachloroethylene or *, then use anhydrous sodium sulfate to isolate impurities and moisture, separating the oil and tetrachloroethylene or * solution to measure the total extracted oil content. The extract can also be adsorbed by magnesium silicate, and after removing polar substances such as animal and vegetable oils, measure the petroleum content. The contents of total extract and petroleum are calculated based on the absorbance A2930, A2960, and A3030 at wave numbers 2930cm⁻¹ (C-H bond stretching vibration in CH₂ groups), 2960cm⁻¹ (C-H bond stretching vibration in CH₃ groups), and 3030cm⁻¹ (C-H bond stretching vibration in aromatic rings). The content of animal and vegetable oils is calculated as the difference between the total extract and petroleum content.

Traditional composition analysis involves sampling followed by qualitative measurement, which is time-consuming and does not provide timely data. Most molecular functional groups of substances can absorb infrared light, making it easy to perform qualitative analysis and quantitative calculation of internal components using spectral energy absorption and conversion. The infrared oil analyzer is based on this principle, using infrared spectrophotometry to scan the sample spectrum, displaying and printing the sample spectrum and the wave number positions of absorption peaks, enabling rapid and accurate measurement of the total oil content in water bodies. Petroleum is defined as: under the conditions specified in the standard "GB/T16488-1996", extracted with CCl₄, not adsorbed by magnesium silicate, and exhibiting characteristic absorption at wave numbers 2930cm⁻¹, 2960cm⁻¹, and 3030cm⁻¹ in whole or in part. Animal and vegetable oils are defined as: under the conditions specified in the standard "GB/T16488-1996", extracted with CCl₄ and adsorbed by magnesium silicate. Based on the * method of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), China has established and promulgated the national standard "Water Quality - Determination of Petroleum and Animal and Vegetable Oils - Infrared Spectrophotometry" (GB/T 16488-1996). This standard includes two methods: infrared spectrophotometry and non-dispersive infrared spectrophotometry, but currently, infrared spectrophotometry is predominantly used in China. Main application fields: The infrared oil analyzer is not only suitable for monitoring petroleum (mineral oil), animal and vegetable oils, and total oil content in various water bodies such as surface water, groundwater, seawater, domestic water, and industrial wastewater, as well as in soil, but it is also the instrument specified by the national standard for monitoring oil content in flue gas (cooking fumes in the catering industry). Additionally, it can be used for purity testing of organic reagents and measurement of the total and component content of various organic substances containing different C-H bonds.
