Technical Principle:

According to the HJ637-2018 national standard, tetrachloroethylene or * is used to extract oil substances from water. Anhydrous sodium sulfate is then employed to isolate impurities and moisture, separating the oil and tetrachloroethylene or * solution to determine the total extracted oil content. The extract can also be adsorbed by magnesium silicate to remove polar substances such as animal and vegetable oils, after which petroleum content is measured. Both total extract and petroleum content are calculated based on the absorbance A2930, A2960, and A3030 at wave numbers 2930 cm⁻¹ (C-H stretching vibration in CH₂ groups), 2960 cm⁻¹ (C-H stretching vibration in CH₃ groups), and 3030 cm⁻¹ (C-H stretching vibration in aromatic rings), respectively. The content of animal and vegetable oils is calculated as the difference between the total extract and petroleum content.

Traditional composition analysis involves sampling followed by qualitative measurement, which is time-consuming and does not provide immediate data. Most molecular functional groups of substances can absorb infrared light, enabling easy qualitative analysis and quantitative calculation of internal components through the absorption and conversion of spectral energy. The infrared oil analyzer operates on this basic principle, using infrared spectrophotometry to scan samples spectrally. It can display and print sample spectra and the wavenumber positions of absorption peaks, allowing rapid and accurate measurement of the total oil content in water bodies. Petroleum is defined as: under the conditions specified in the standard "GB/T16488-1996," substances extracted with CCl₄ that are not adsorbed by magnesium silicate and exhibit characteristic absorption at all or part of the spectral bands at wavenumbers 2930 cm⁻¹, 2960 cm⁻¹, and 3030 cm⁻¹. Animal and vegetable oils are defined as: substances extracted with CCl₄ under the conditions specified in the standard "GB/T16488-1996" and adsorbed by magnesium silicate. Based on the * method of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), China has established and promulgated the national standard "Water Quality—Determination of Petroleum and Animal and Vegetable Oils—Infrared Spectrophotometry" (GB/T 16488-1996). This standard includes two methods: infrared spectrophotometry and non-dispersive infrared spectrophotometry, though infrared spectrophotometry is currently more widely used in China. Main application areas: The infrared oil analyzer is not only suitable for monitoring petroleum (mineral oil), animal and vegetable oils, and total oil content in various water bodies such as surface water, groundwater, seawater, domestic water, and industrial wastewater, as well as in soil, but it is also the instrument specified by the national standard for monitoring oil content in flue gas (cooking fumes from the catering industry). Additionally, it can be used for purity testing of organic reagents and measurement of the total and component content of various organic compounds containing different C-H bonds.
