Thermoplastic starch is also known as "amorphous starch," which is made disordered by certain methods to impart thermoplasticity. Starch molecules have a polysaccharide molecular structure and contain a large number of hydroxyl groups. Due to the action of intermolecular and intramolecular hydrogen bonds, their melting temperature is high, while their decomposition temperature is lower than their melting temperature. Therefore, during thermal processing, starch molecules decompose before melting. Traditional plastic processing methods mostly use thermal processing for molding, so to produce starch-based all-starch plastics, natural starch must be made thermoplastic. This thermoplasticity can be achieved by altering the internal crystalline structure of starch molecules, disrupting intramolecular and intermolecular hydrogen bonds, and scrambling the double-helix crystalline structure of starch molecules. This reduces the melting temperature of starch, giving it thermoplastic properties.
