Sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate, also known as Dithane, has the chemical name sodium dimethyl dithiocarbamate (English name: sodium dimethyl dithiocarbamate), also known as N,N-Dimethyldithiocarbamate sodium salt. Its dihydrate molecular formula is C3H6NS2Na·2H2O.
The pure form of sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate appears as flaky white crystals with a slight ammonia odor and is highly soluble in water. Crystals obtained by crystallization contain 2.5 molecules of water of crystallization, losing 2 molecules of water of crystallization when heated to 115°C and completely losing water of crystallization at 130°C. The industrial intermediate is a 15% aqueous solution, appearing as a slightly yellow or grass-green transparent liquid. It is harmful if swallowed and can irritate the eyes upon contact. It is mainly used as a bactericide and rubber accelerator.
