China has a rich variety of local chicken breeds, most of which are dual-purpose for both meat and eggs. They share characteristics such as tolerance to rough feeding, wide adaptability, strong foraging ability, stress resistance, disease resistance, attractive body shape and appearance, and excellent meat quality. They are all suitable for free-range farming techniques in large sheds. 1. Site selection for chicken sheds: Large sheds for raising local chickens can be built in hilly areas, orchards, or forests. Site selection should consider the area of the shed and the terrain of the location. There should be exercise areas around the shed, preferably with small groves and wild grass, making grassy hills and slopes ideal for building sheds. The shed should be constructed on high, dry, flat, or slightly sloped land with good drainage. The ground inside the shed should be slightly higher than the surrounding area to facilitate drainage and keep the interior dry. The shed should face south or southeast to maximize sunlight and drainage. It should not be built on hilltops with large day-night temperature variations or in low-lying areas prone to poor conditions. Factors such as water source quality, transportation, electricity, and the presence of pollution sources nearby should also be considered. 2. Structure of the chicken shed: The construction should adapt to local conditions while considering factors like lighting and operational convenience. It should provide both insulation against cold and cooling during heat. Drainage ditches should be built around the shed to promptly divert rainwater and prevent water accumulation outside from affecting the dryness inside. The size of the shed should be determined based on the scale of chicken farming.
