Traditional fiber identifiers detect dark fibers by checking for pulsed light (270 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz), but they cannot locate and identify live signal fiber sequences without interrupting service. EXFO's LFD300/TG300 used together can solve this problem. They are suitable for data centers, FTTx engineering upgrades, handovers, and troubleshooting.
The LFD-300 Live Fiber Detector is a high-performance tool used to determine whether a fiber is dark or active. It displays power and direction.
The TG-300 Tone Generator is a non-intrusive clip-on device that adds a typical 0.2 dB non-destructive signature to the live signal by applying gentle low-frequency modulation pressure to the fiber. Within seconds, the LFD300 detects this signature.

The innovative LFD-300B Live Fiber Identifier™, used with the TG-300B Tone Generator, enables technicians to identify specific live fibers without disconnecting them—and, importantly, without guesswork. It allows technicians to identify live fibers without disconnection, eliminating the need for subjective judgment. The result: no more network outages caused by insufficient fiber inspection or identification, and minimal intervention in the access network, helping to prevent errors.
Performing network upgrades or optical testing requires disconnecting fibers. However, this is far from easy, as incorrect fiber labeling or poor record-keeping complicates finding the correct fiber connections. While tone generators (270 Hz, 1 kHz, and 2 kHz) can identify dark fibers, live fiber identification often involves one technician pulling one end of a fiber patch cord while another attempts to identify the moving patch cord at the other end. This process leads to significant delays and unnecessary service interruptions.
The LFD-300B Fiber Identifier provides a solution: it tests power loss as the angle changes. Thus, for each fiber type and single-mode wavelength, the angle is automatically optimized. It does not damage the fiber: bending is always minimized, and the fiber is released when no power is detected.
Signal Flow Detection and Direction Identification
To detect dark/live fibers or identify dark fibers using pulsed light (270 Hz, 1 kHz, and 2 kHz), traditional LFD functionality can achieve this. However, they cannot accurately pinpoint specific live fibers (in cases of questionable labels and poor record-keeping) and do not help ensure the correct fiber is disconnected. EXFO's LFD-300B used with the TG-300B—a non-intrusive, non-disruptive clip-on signal generator based on fiber identifier technology—addresses this need while ensuring low loss. The TG-300B is installed at the transmitter site and adds a typical 0.25 dB signature to the fiber by applying gentle low-frequency modulation pressure. Within seconds, the LFD-300B detects this signature at the other end.
