Coal, commonly known as anthracite, has a volatile content of less than or equal to 10%. It has undergone long geological evolution, possesses high mechanical strength, is difficult to grind, and includes ore powder binders and dust removal ash binders. It is not prone to spontaneous combustion during storage, making it suitable for long-distance transportation. It has a bright black luster, is difficult to ignite, and even after ignition, it is hard to burn completely. When burning, it produces a short blue flame, along with ore powder binders and iron powder binders, without emitting black smoke, and has poor coking properties. It generally has low moisture content, and the ignition temperature of coal is about 700°C.
Bituminous coal has a relatively high volatile content (15-45%), appears gray-black with a luster, and has high calorific value. It is relatively easy to ignite and burn completely, and its texture is generally softer than anthracite. Bituminous coal ignites and burns easily. For bituminous coal and coal powder with a volatile content exceeding 25%, precautions must be taken to prevent spontaneous combustion during storage. Low-quality bituminous coal with high ash content is prone to ash accumulation, slagging, and abrasion on heating surfaces, so protective measures are necessary. Some bituminous coals form clumps when volatile matter is released during heating, which is referred to as caking property. For grate-fired boilers, excessive caking can lead to incomplete combustion of coal, while insufficient caking may cause coal to fall through the grate and burn incompletely. The ignition temperature of bituminous coal is about 400–500°C. Examples include bituminous coal produced in Datong, Pingshuo, Huainan, Fushun, Yima, and other mining areas in China.
