Metrological Calibration

Introduction:

ISO 10012-1, "Quality Assurance Requirements for Measurement and Testing Equipment," defines "calibration" as: "A set of operations performed under specified conditions to determine the relationship between the indicated value of a measuring instrument or measurement system, or the value represented by a material measure or reference material, and the corresponding known value of the quantity being measured."

Metrology is the activity of achieving unit uniformity and ensuring the accuracy and reliability of measured values.

Calibration—A set of operations performed under specified conditions. The first step is to determine the relationship between the quantity values provided by measurement standards and the corresponding indications. The second step uses this information to determine the relationship for obtaining measurement results from the indications. Here, both the quantity values provided by measurement standards and the corresponding indications have measurement uncertainties. Calibration results can assign an indicated value to the measured quantity, determine a correction for the indication, and also determine other metrological characteristics, such as the effects of influence quantities. Calibration results may be documented in a "calibration certificate" or "calibration report."
