Mart Stam is a Dutch architect. Different from Hans J. Wegner, he established an unshakable position in the furniture industry with just one work. In 1926, the world's first cantilever chair was born. This "C-shaped" leg structure broke the rule that a chair must have at least three legs. The first cantilever chair was made by cutting and joining metal gas pipes. This chair had an extremely avant-garde and sleek design, and caused a sensation as soon as it was launched.
However, it still had flaws in elasticity. It was not until two architectural masters, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Marcel Breuer, discovered that seamless steel tubes had the advantages of both strength and elasticity. In 1927, they designed the "MR10" and "B33" cantilever chairs respectively, marking the beginning of the evolutionary era of cantilever chairs.
Designer Mart Stam focused on sleek design structures. The S33 chair was the first cantilever chair in design history, designed in 1926, earlier than Marcel Breuer's B33 chair. It not only successfully used the "C-shaped leg" to defy gravity, but also, during the Bauhaus period when the steel tube chair trend was prevalent, made many designers compete to develop cantilever chairs, and even sparked rumors and debates about who was the "father of the cantilever chair". However, there can only be one "first in history", just as there is only one truth to the rumors.
