In 1886, Mies (Ludwig Mies van der Rohe) was born in Aachen, Germany, originally named Maria Ludwig Michael. After establishing his own laboratory, he changed his name to Mies van der Rohe. Mies van der Rohe is one of the renowned architects, alongside Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier. Like Le Corbusier, Mies worked with the famous architect Peter Behrens from 1908 to 1911, learning a great deal during that time. Later, he adopted the Bauhaus architectural style and inherited the legacy of Walter Gropius.

In 1929, Mies designed the German Pavilion for the Barcelona International Exposition, which made him one of the most prominent modern designers of the time. "Less is more" was the design philosophy he adhered to, and his design works feature details refined to an absolute level of simplicity, with great emphasis on precision. In his autobiography, he once said, "I don't want to be brilliant, I just want to be better!" Although Mies is primarily regarded as an architectural master, his innovative and dynamic furniture designs also established him as one of the first-generation modern furniture design masters.
