Lightning Eliminator consists of three parts: an ionization device, connecting wires, and a grounding device. It is designed based on the principle of discharge from metal needle-shaped electrode tips. Under the electric field of a thundercloud, when the field strength reaches a certain value, the surrounding air becomes ionized and moves away under the force of the electric field, while other air molecules take its place and become ionized in succession. This process continues, resulting in an ion current flowing from the metal to the surroundings. As the potential increases, the ion current grows exponentially. When lightning appears above the lightning eliminator and the protected equipment, both the eliminator and the nearby ground induce charges opposite in polarity to those of the thundercloud. The ionization device, equipped with numerous needle-shaped electrodes, allows a large amount of charge from the ground to be emitted from the needle-shaped electrodes under the influence of the thundercloud's electric field, moving toward the thundercloud to neutralize it, thereby weakening the lightning field and preventing the protected object from being struck by lightning.
Lightning Eliminator works by protecting electrical equipment from high transient overvoltages, limiting the duration of follow current, and often restricting the magnitude of follow current. It is also a type of lightning protection device. Comprising an ionization device with many electrodes placed above the protected object, a ground current collection device installed in the surface layer of the earth, and connecting wires linking these two components, the ionization device maintains roughly the same potential as the ground in the strong electric field of a thundercloud. The potential difference between it and the nearby air increases sharply with the thundercloud's electric field strength, causing the air near the needle tips in the field strength region to ionize, generating a large number of space charges. Typically, the lower layer of a thundercloud carries a negative charge, while the ground induces a positive charge. The ionized negative charges are absorbed by the ground current collection device, and the ionized positive charges are attracted to and neutralize the negative charges of the thundercloud, thus achieving the effect of lightning elimination.
