Phosphorous acid, chemical formula H₂(HPO₃), is an oxygen-containing acid of phosphorus. There are three types: orthophosphorous acid (H₃PO₃), pyrophosphorous acid (H₄P₂O₅), and metaphosphorous acid (HPO₂), with the commonly referred stable form being orthophosphorous acid. It appears as a colorless or white crystal, highly deliquescent in air, with a garlic-like odor. Its specific gravity is 1.651 (21.2°C), melting point is 73.6°C, and it decomposes into phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄) and phosphine (PH₃) above 180°C. It slowly transforms into orthophosphoric acid (H₃PO₄) by absorbing oxygen from the air. It is highly soluble in water and ethanol and is widely used in water treatment and the fertilizer industry.
